About Me
Background
I grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado. I currently live in Carbondale, CO.
I went to high school at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School and went on to study Computer Science at Lewis & Clark College, a liberal arts school in Portland, OR. I know, a B.A. in science from a liberal arts school doesn't really hold up to engineering schools, but the balance is good, (that's what they told us at least). I kind of fell into CS, I've always been mathematically minded, but there's something about using math to create applications that beats ending up with a circled number on a white board. And yes, Engineering, Physics, and plenty of other disciplines have produced impressive things with applied math. At the time though, Computer Graphics beat out Calc 2.
Curiously, I ended up working for a marketing company in my hometown, and began making websites for them. There's very little math involved. Conveniently, I'm not bad with aesthetics, so I began making sites on the side. Check out my portfolio for examples. Right now, I'm just enjoying the sunshine and making websites.
My Philosophy on Websites
Some people might call me crazy, but I handcode the sites I make. This might stem from the Computer Architecture and C classes I took - I like to see everything that's going on in the background. Sure, I use Javascript libraries, but I try to realize what they're doing to the markup. Wordpress people might build a site faster, but mine is cleaner. WYSIWYG's are my enemy. Sometimes it looks like what you see, but extremely often do you get so much more than you need. 'Oh, you chose the wrong size font? Let me just put in a conflicting tag and leave the incorrect one right there!'. It bugs me, and I like getting down and dirty with:
- XHTML
- HTML5
- CSS
- jQuery (Javascript)
- PHP
- MySQL
